Walk or Run to Bring Clean Water to 2,000 people in Honduras!

WHEN: Any time between October 14 and November 1, 2022

WHERE: Anywhere in the World

WHY: Contamination from the garbage dump in Tegucigalpa has poisoned the local sources of water for the people living and working near the dump, so a new source of clean, uncontaminated water is sorely needed.

WE’RE LOOKING FOR TEAM CAPTAINS. With just 250 teams raising $1,000 each, we can build the infrastructure needed to bring fresh water to our scholars and their families, friends and neighbors living in this community.

The IntSam Global 5K is a free event with an emphasis on bringing people together to race with teams from other communities across the world.  The race can be run anytime and anywhere in the world between October 14th and November 1, 2022.

This year, IntSam Scholars from developing nations will be running and raising money for fresh water in Honduras.  Teams of students from high schools, colleges, business, and churches across the United States are doing the same.

The Mihretu Challenge

Just a few years ago, Mihretu was a teenage dropout forced to go to the dump in Ethiopia to find food to eat.  With a scholarship from International Samaritan, he’s back in school.  Last year he won the IntSam 5K with a blistering time of 14.37.

We added a 5K Relay to see if any team running together can beat Mihretu’s time.

You don’t have to be fast to do this event.  The Relay is also just a great way to complete a 5K as a team when you have friends and family members not ready to run the full distance alone.

Teams participating in the 5K Relay cannot exceed 5 people, and the individuals on the team can run as short or as long of distances as they want, as long as the team’s total distance measures 5K, or 3.1 miles.

Why Water?

According to the United Nations:

  • Contaminated water and a lack of basic sanitation undermine efforts to end poverty and disease.
  • 297,000 children under five die every year from intestinal diseases due to poor sanitation, poor hygiene, or unsafe drinking water.
  • Every $1 invested in improved sanitation translates into an average global economic return of $5.5. Those benefits are experienced specifically by the disadvantaged communities that need them most.

We’ve seen firsthand the incredible impact that clean water can have on a community. Check out the video to the right to see what clean water did for our community in Ethiopia.
